World Institute for Security Enhancement
The American Society for
Civil Engineers has a passion for preparing the civil
engineering profession for tomorrow’s world. The
publications The Vision for Civil
Engineering in 2025 and Achieving
the Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025: A Roadmap for the
Profession mark the culmination of almost eight years of
effort to redefine what it will mean to be a civil engineer in
the world of the future. Vision 2025 represents the collective
wisdom of more than 60
experts from around the world and presents an
aspirational vision for what the future can and should be.
Numerous individual civil engineers and civil engineering
organizations around the world have embraced this appeal for a
new, enhanced role for the profession. They call on civil
engineers to control their own destiny rather than letting
events control it for them.
As the preeminent
organization for security professionals worldwide, ASIS has an
important role to play in helping the private sector secure its
business and critical infrastructure, whether from natural
disaster, accidents or planned actions, such as terrorist
attacks, vandalism, etc. ASIS had previously chosen not to
promulgate guidelines and standards, but world events have
brought to the forefront the need for a professional security
organization to spearhead an initiative to create security
advisory provisions. By addressing specific concerns and issues
inherent to the security industry, security guidelines and
standards will better serve the needs of security professionals
by increasing the effectiveness and productivity of security
practices and solutions, as well as enhancing the
professionalism of the industry.

Homeland Security -
Interagency Security Committee: Standards and Best Practices.
On October 19, 1995, six months after the Oklahoma City bombing
of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, President Clinton
issued Executive Order 12977, creating the Interagency Security
Committee (ISC) to address continuing government-wide security
for federal facilities. Prior to 1995, minimum physical security
standards did not exist for nonmilitary federally owned or
leased facilities. The ISC’s
mandate is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of physical
security in, and the protection of buildings and civilian
federal facilities in the United States. The ISC standards
apply to all civilian federal facilities in the United
States—whether government-owned, leased or managed; to be
constructed or modernized; or to be purchased.
The Leading Authority on
Global Security: Facts, Analysis, Influence... The
International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the
world’s leading authority on political-military conflict.
The IISS, based
in London, is both a limited company in UK law and a registered
charity. It has offices in the US, in Singapore and in Bahrain.
The IISS was founded in 1958 in the UK by a number of
individuals interested in how to maintain civilised
international relations in the nuclear age. Much of the
Institute’s early work focused on nuclear deterrence and arms
control and was hugely influential in setting the intellectual
structures for managing the Cold War.
